Pre-review
I remember the time like it was yesterday when first using Audible. I've listened to so many audiobooks before audible existed, but those avenues changed with the "Preview" ability. This book and the narrator was a game changer to me that sparked my passion into so many books after it. We all have those certain stories that triggered something in us, for more. As "Neo" from the Matrix, learning Jujitsu on the Nebuchadnezzar, after Apoc said - "I think he likey. Do you want more?". As "Neo" responded "Hell Yes". That's how I felt about this book. It was raw to me at the time. The character in this book and I had a bond, that you'll figure out within the review.
Review
I hit the preview button in the audible app one day. I wasn't a zombie genre person, but the description of the van with this narrator's voice made me hit the "add to wish list". I listened to that "preview" several times over a few weeks. I just couldn't see how a zombie apocalypse story could be any good. Well one evening it changed. I was introduced to Gus.
The opening scene set the tone of what was to come. Scaveging to survive with a depth of paranoia gave me a feeling of danger at any moment. I was waiting for that first encounter. He found a corpse in that first house and his guard went up. Was it reanimated or actually dead? Let's just say it was dead, but not dead.
The story is a slow burn in a good way. Character building and learning about Halifax city was a suction cup to my ears.
Gus was a serious alcoholic and understandably why. I was fighting my demons of the drink at this time, so it resonated. He was fighting the zombie apocalypse, unfortunately I drank not to forget zombies, but to forget life. In away this book started the path of my sobriety.
This isn't a polite book for the faint of heart. It's a gritty story of survival being alone with but one friend, Captain Morgan. The Captain was to Gus, as Wilson was to Chuck Noland.
Narration
I've listened to most of all R.C. Bray's narrations. He doesn't disappoint and changes from first person to third like Picasso on the canvas. I believe this series raised the bar for narrators across all Sci-Fi genres. I see Bray as a narrator, you can bet it's in my library.
